everyone but the father. laura ingle now live. >> the corrections officer talked about that confession that he overheard with steven hayes and in that confession, he told jurors that steven hayes when he he was talking to his inmate said he wasn't sure at first if he could go through with murdering the mother, jennifer. but he decided to go through with it when he looked outside and he saw the police cruisers just outside the window. that is more unbearable facts that were revealed in this case today which means that help was just a few feet away when all three females were alive before the mother was strangled and before that house was set on fire. >> shepard: that's the defense. both sides have rested. what now? >> there is going to be a hearing tomorrow just with the attorneys and with the judge. they're going to talk about what happens next, about charging the jury going over the facts of the case, closing arguments will happen on friday. then the case is expected to go to the jury on monday and as you see there on screen right, the next suspect will be tried next year after hayes,

barely alive. laura ingle was inside the courtroom in new haven, connecticut, today. the court heard from forensic experts, i know. tell us what they said. >> good evening, those experts were able to talk about how they tested the d.n.a. samples taken from the victims. we're talking about blood, saliva, and see men and match them directly to the suspects in this case. prosecutors allege that steven hayes sexually assaulted the mother jennifer hawk pettit before strangling her with his hands. joshua majewski who is expected to face trial next year is accused assaulting 11-year-old pettit before helping hayes light the house on fire. all three were killed in this attack. jurors heard from a fire marshal today that testified that an accelerant like gasoline was poured directly on to the pettit daughters as they lied tied up in their bed that was testimony that sent family members out of the courthouse in tears today, jon? >> jon: what about what happened outside the courtroom? tell us about that. >> yeah there was certainly high emotions happening right out here on the courthouse steps.

concern weighing on americans heading into the midterm elections. laura ingle is live to break it all down. what are also voters talking about? >> the war in iraq, how well the president is doing and yes, a lot of concern about the economy. number one, when asked whether the obama administration has made the economy better or worse 47% feel the economy is worse because of the administration's effort while 36% say the economy is better. not surprisingly, 63% are more likely at 8% saying the obama administration made the economy better. independent voters were asked if the stimulus plan worked. the majority 57% think the $8900 billion stimulus plan hasn't worked. over one in three, 37% think it has helped the economy. >> gregg: the end of august will mark the end of american combat operations in iraq. how are voters feeling today about that war and our involvement in iraq? >> interesting numbers, despite contentious history, most american voters have made a positive judgment about the efforts in iraq. six in ten, that is 58% of voters think overall the united states did the right thing by go

get started. laura ingle is live outside the courthouse in new haven. jurors heard more about this and what else. >> reporter: cell phone pictures as well, good morning, bill, and, you know, there seemed to be a big sense of enthusiasm between the two suspects in the hours before the horrific assault and murders back in 2007. a state crime lab technician took the stand yesterday, went through the text messages, that were discovered on stephen hayes and another man's cell phone for the jurors, after hayes allegedly sent the message, quote "i'm chomping at the bit to get started" text an hey, come place allegedly texted back, i'm putting the kid to bed. hold your horse, josh's daughter was five years old at the time of the crimes and hayes allegedly texted back, dude, the horses want to get loose, lol which stands for laugh out loud and jurors were told -- and not shown, cell phone pictures from the cell phone of graphic photos he allegedly took of himself during the home invasion and of the young victims, who were shown tied up to their beds with ropes. bill: autopsy pictures will b

, pushing for a high-tech approach to be sure every vote is counted, laura ingle is live, and what is the lawmaker proposing. >> reporter: good morning, we are talking about tom moriarity's proposal, that would create a secure internet based voting system for active duty members of the military serving overseas who in the past as you said had a hard time getting the votes in on time and this year, 33 states are allowing millions of overseas and military voters to use some form of electronic voting hoping to make the system more efficient. >> it's a cumbersome process for someone overseas, serving in the military to get an absentee ballot and have to apply to the county clerk and the county clerk has to send the ballot and they have to fill it out and send it back and oftentimes, this may get lost in translation, and it may not get back and -- in the a timely manner and may not be counted until after the election. >> and the numbers back them in, percentage wise more members of the military are registered than civilians and, the votes are counted at a much lower rate than those by the gene
